about
This song tells the story of the Pals battalions, the first of which where created by Lord Derby of Liverpool at the beginning of World War One. The idea was to encourage groups of friends, workmates, members of sports clubs etc to all sign up together. They would receive basic training and would be sent overseas to assist, mainly, with supplies and logistics. In reality however they where dispatched to the frontline and expected to fight alongside the vastly more experienced and (slightly) more prepared regulars. During the Battle of the Somme, on the first day alone, 584 of the 720 members of the Accrington Pals were killed or wounded. Eventually, due in part to the devastation suffered by entire communities, the Pals battalions where phased out.
